So, it would make the most sense to back up and describe the world I come from. My dad. My dad is a doctor. In fact, he's an MD, PhD, MBA, Rhodes Scholar. My mom, also a doctor, an MD, PhD, Marshall Scholar. In fact, this is me at her medical school graduation. My brother and sister are both doctors or doctors to be. Their girlfriend and boyfriend are also doctors. My incredible girlfriend is a surgeon who went to Harvard undergrad at 16, then to Harvard Medical School, and is now at a top-ranked surgical program in the country. So, literally, in my immediate social circle and family, we're batting eight for eight doctors. And that was the world I was born into, the world I grew up in and have lived in for most of my life. And as a result my life was very much directed toward that goal.

And I did well along that path. I studied hard. I was valedictorian at Dartmouth. I got a full ride for my PhD at Oxford. And then I completed my MD at Harvard Medical School. And at that point that is the point at which it's all supposed to pay off. At that point you're supposed to choose to become a practicing doctor, treat patients, write prescriptions, dawn the white coat, run a lab, and get proper grants. But I didn't. So it's like I sprinted every step of a marathon and then stopped right before the finish line. And honestly, the hardest part for me was not abandoning a goal I once thought I had but explaining it to those who I loved. Because I don't believe I'm a self-made person. I did work hard. But it's the support I received from my friends and family and loved ones that made my successes even possible. So abandoning that path, the path they'd supported me on my whole life felt like I was failing them. But in the end I didn't even apply to a medical residency. Which is a taboo thing to do, let me be clear. In a medical family like mine, it's like working all month and then throwing away your paycheck into the trash. It makes no sense. But it did to me.

And here's my why. Because while I was studying to become a doctor, I was also living a double life as a patient. My life was literally split between time in the lab and in school and in a hospital bed, even in intensive care and palliative care. There were days when literally getting out of bed to go to the bathroom cost me more effort and was more painful than running marathons used to be for me. And when I got sick, I should describe what it was, it was inflammatory bowel disease and I went downhill fast. It nearly took everything from me. And to describe it a bit, sorry if this is TMI, what I was going through, well, violent, uncontrollable, bloody diarrhea at least 12 times per day. In fact, you know that valedictory speech clip you saw from earlier, my college graduation? The only way I was able to give that speech was by fasting for 2 days to make sure I wouldn't have an episode on stage. In fact, you can even see in the video my face is a little bit puffy from the corticosteroids I was taking for my ulcerative colitis flare. And the physical pain was the least of it. I lost my athleticism because I couldn't nourish myself. I lost my social life and romance was off the table because saying, "Hey, I got to go blood." kind of kills the mood, if I'm being honest. That's where I was at 22 as I was finishing college and starting my PhD then ready to go to med school.
