Why I Went from Harvard to YouTube

In a Nutshell

The speaker abandoned a promising medical career (Harvard MD/PhD, valedictorian at Dartmouth, Oxford PhD) to pursue YouTube because conventional medicine failed to treat his severe inflammatory bowel disease. A ketogenic diet put his condition into remission when standard treatments failed, revealing a gap between effective interventions and evidence-based medicine. He now advocates for curiosity-driven self-experimentation as the most powerful medical tool, aiming to empower people with information and hope rather than prescriptions or surgeries.

I was this close to becoming a doctor. In fact, I did my MD and my PhD. And then I ditched it. It was a decision I made that my friends and family just couldn't understand. After watching me study hard and devote my life to becoming a practicing doctor, to them it looked like I just threw it all away to become what? An internet influencer? Now, if this story were that simple, I would be ashamed. And I certainly wouldn't be making this video. But instead, I'm choosing to share my story with you and be vulnerable in ways that I haven't really been vulnerable with you before. I'm even going to tell you things that I haven't told my own family. And if you're wondering why I'm doing this now, it's because our community is growing so fast that there are now millions of you who know me but don't really know me. Like you know my internet avatar and that I like to nerd out about metabolic health with you, but not who I am and my why. And because I hope what we're building is a true long-lasting community, I think you deserve to know a little bit more about me on a deeper level.

So, it would make the most sense to back up and describe the world I come from. My dad. My dad is a doctor. In fact, he's an MD, PhD, MBA, Rhodes Scholar. My mom, also a doctor, an MD, PhD, Marshall Scholar. In fact, this is me at her medical school graduation. My brother and sister are both doctors or doctors to be. Their girlfriend and boyfriend are also doctors. My incredible girlfriend is a surgeon who went to Harvard undergrad at 16, then to Harvard Medical School, and is now at a top-ranked surgical program in the country. So, literally, in my immediate social circle and family, we're batting eight for eight doctors. And that was the world I was born into, the world I grew up in and have lived in for most of my life. And as a result my life was very much directed toward that goal.
